Root Insurance: What You Need to Know Before Signing Up
Wondering if anyone else has had this experience. I am using root insurance and have for a little over 2 months. My rate has stayed the same and is reasonable for my vehicle. But they emailed me yesterday saying I need to list one of my relatives either as a driver or excluded driver on my policy because they live with me. They said if I don't want to add them I need to send them his (my relatives) insurance card for proof that they have their own insurance. If I refuse to send information or do nothing, they will put my policy in non-renewal. But adding him could change my rate. Has anyone heard of this??
What You Should Do
Add All Relevant Drivers: Ensure that all potential drivers in your household are either added to your policy or excluded with proper documentation. This helps you avoid any coverage issues or policy cancellations.
Provide Proof of Insurance: If a household member has their own insurance, provide proof to avoid higher rates or forced inclusion on your policy.
Understand the Risks of Exclusion: Excluding someone from your policy could save you money upfront, but it’s crucial to understand that if this person drives your car and gets into an accident, you might not be covered.

Yes, this is common with all carriers.
You won't find much, any(?), love for Root on here but this is 100% the industry normal.
People who live with you have access to the car and need to be rated or excluded, if allowed, in the policy. Excluding could be a bad idea. If they drive your car and have an accident there won't be coverage.
This is a standard practice. People related to you that live with you typically qualify as an insured on an auto policy. Root, like any other carrier, instends to collect premium that represents the risk they are taking based on who they are obligated to cover. Since your relative would likely be considered a covered person, they need to be able to charge for that risk or take steps to carve them out of your policy with a form that specifically excludes them; or proof that another company would be primarily responsible for covering them in an accident.
Final Thoughts
Root Insurance, like other insurers, follows industry norms when it comes to listing household members on auto policies. While their rates might initially seem appealing, it’s vital to stay on top of communication from your insurer and comply with their requirements to avoid unexpected costs or coverage gaps.
